Build a Small-Scale MFT Table
George VondriskaA Multi-Function Table (MFT) is a versatile shop accessory that can be used for a variety of tasks such as sanding, routing, or power carving. When coupled with the right clamps, an MFT also has the unique ability to securely hold organic shapes such as log cookies or burls while you carve on them. This provides improved efficiency as well as safety, as you can focus your attention on carving rather than also worrying about keeping the work piece secure.
There are many MFT options on the market today, with prices ranging from modest to extreme. Since we are woodworkers, however, why not make our own MFT table? George came up with a design for a DIY MFT table that works with his Jawhorse, a sensible design that takes advantage of an existing piece of equipment in this shop.
Here are some of the key design considerations if you decide to make your own DIY MFT:
Size the table for your application: George designed his MFT for power carving individual bowl-sized pieces. You might have other applications in mind, or perhaps your typical bowl size might be larger. Give some careful consideration to the types of projects that you expect to create on your MFT, and choose a table size that will accommodate all of your work.
Choose your clamps before you build: There are a good variety of hold-downs, bench dogs and clamps available that can be used in your MFT. By choosing these first, you can then based your hole size on the size of hole that your clamps require.
Hole spacing: You’ll want to space the holes on your DIY MFT table according to the type of work that you anticipate doing on your MFT table. George discusses hole spacing strategy in the video.
After you’ve completed your MFT, perhaps it's time to carve some bowls and platters!
