Titebond - Assemble a Mitered Waterfall

Assembling a mitered waterfall edge can be tricky, but the results are worth it. The goal is to have the grain flowing continuously from the horizontal to the vertical surface and, of course, the two parts are joined with a miter. Part of the challenge is successfully clamping across the miter.

When the joint is cut, save the scrap piece that comes out of the miter. Cut it into short lengths that can be used as clamp blocks, bridging the miter joint. The clamp blocks need to be secure enough to allow clamp pressure that closes the miter, but you probably don't want them to be a permanent part of your project. This is where CA (cyanoacrylate) glue and masking tape comes into the picture.

Put masking tape on the outside face of the project and draw a line 1/4" from the miter's knife edge. Use thick CA glue to fasten (temporarily) the clamp blocks to the masking tape. Put the edge of the clamp block on the layout line and make sure the blocks on each side of the miter are aligned with each other. Save on clean up by putting masking tape on the inside of the miter so you don't end up with squeeze out all over the inside corner.

Assemble the joint with Titebond Original glue. Reinforcing the joint with some form of loose tenon is a great idea. Take advantage of the clamp blocks and clamp across the miter. Remove the masking tape from the inside of the miter joint when the glue is rubbery. When the glue is completely dry, remove the clamps and pop the clamp blocks loose. You may need to use a mallet to set the blocks free.

Got a project I'm working on which is gonna result in a waterfall drop on that horizontal piece. So that means I gotta put a miter together like this, and there are ways to make this a whole lot simpler than it would otherwise be. We're gonna take advantage of Titebond Original in the joint itself, and we're gonna take advantage of CA glue to do some work with clamping blocks. All of that is on its way to you. First step, wanna not have a bunch of squeeze out on the inside of that miter, so I'm gonna get ahead of that with some masking tape.

Now, where we're going with this is that these pieces, which when they were still one big piece, they're the off cut that came out of creating this joint and then I cut them into shorter pieces. We want these to get fastened as clamp blocks here. Here's the thing. Glue works really well, so if I put those clamp blocks on there, maybe they're there forever. So what we're gonna do to not have them there forever, masking tape again.

And I like to have those blocks uniformly spaced from the knife edge of the miter. So I'm gonna do this. And then we're ready for CA glue. So the benefit to this is that we're gonna use CA glue, I'm using thick, in order to put the clamp block on here, but you'll see in a little bit, because of the way we're doing this, we'll be able to easily pop these off later. And I'm putting that edge right on the pencil line I just created.

Now, we'll give those just a minute to dry, and then we'll be ready to put this joint together. Give that CA glue a little bit of time to dry, and if, you know, instant isn't enough, one can always make CA glue instant-er by adding accelerator. Then we're ready for a little Original in the joint. And this is getting reinforced with some delicious biscuits. And this is where these blocks pay off, 'cause now I can bridge that seam with a clamp.

I got it. It's amazing how effectively these hold. So we'll watch glue dry for a little bit, and then we'll come back and look at getting those clamp blocks off of there. Cut four. Three.

Let's do some disassembly. Backtracking a little bit, the tape that goes on the inside of the miter, peel that off before the glue gets bone dry. You wanna take that off while the glue is still a little bit rubbery so that that tape can come off easily. Here on the outside, might need a mallet. We'll see.

Oh, that was easy. That was easy. That one not so easy. That's why you need a mallet. So overall, what we're after here is a system where we can put these blocks on with the benefit of CA glue and the masking tape, put that miter together, and then when we're done, take it all apart.

So Titebond Original for the joint, CA glue for the temporary joint combined with masking tape, accelerator as needed to move things along. This is a great way to put miters together.
