When you have an unorthodox cut to make, such as cutting the legs on an X-brace to consistent lengths, there’s not an out-of-the-box solution to easily make this cut that is safe, accurate and consistent. This type of situation requires a bit of ingenuity. One clever way to make accurate cuts on oddly shaped pieces is to use an L-Fence. An L-Fence extends the capabilities of a table saw, allowing you to define a registration position on many odd shaped pieces, and cut them safely on the table saw.

The process of making and using an L-Fence to cut irregularly shaped pieces is straightforward:

Build the L-Fence: The build process is self-explanatory once you see the image of the L-Fence. Build yours to a size that is appropriate for your saw and fence.

Clamp the L-Fence to your table saw’s fence: Use the technique that George demonstrates to position the fence, and secure it to the table saw fence using bar clamps.

Attach a straight guide to your work piece. This will act as a stabilizer as you feed your work piece safely through the cut.

After you have your L-Fence built, you’ll likely find some uses for it as you are building your furniture projects.
