Wood glue is perhaps the most commonly used product in our shops. Because you use it on most projects, you probably have some questions about how to get the best value out of it, and what are some of the do’s, don’ts and urban legends about PVA wood glue. Bob Behnke, an adhesives expert from Franklin International (makers of Titebond and other woodworking adhesive products), stopped by to visit with George. They discussed the frequently asked questions of a variety of woodworking glues.

Some of the topics that George and Bob discussed include:

- Can you water down glue for better penetration or to extend its shelf life? Will the water weaken the bond strength? How about vinegar as a thinning agent for glue?

- What happens to glue if you add salt to reduce slipping of the mating parts? Will this weaken the bond, pr actually strengthen it?

- What is causing CA glue to smoke? Is that common, and is it unsafe to breathe the vapors?

- What does CA accelerator actually do, and when should I consider using it? What are the downsides?

- What applications are best suited to using hide glue? Hide glue has been around for hundreds of years, and is still available today. When would I consider using that rather than the more common PVA glue, or CA glue?

Understanding the various attributes of wood glue is important to help you build your projects with confidence. Check out some of the project videos and articles that WWGOA has to offer.
