Table Saw Fence Adjustment or Upgrade

ask WWGOA text with a man posing

“I have a relic of a table saw. It is a Delta 8″ arbor saw. My frustration is this. When I use it, the back half of the table saw fence does not stay in place. It will move anywhere from 1/4″ to 3/8”. I take all of the necessary precautions in measuring from the blade to the fence and so forth. I have to use a clamp to keep it in place and this is a pain in the butt.

Do you know where I can find an after market fence and rails that do not cost an arm and leg, or is there is a way to fix my problem? Please let me know if I have not given enough information on the fence. Just for your information, the last update and revision for this saw was in 1953. The saw is wonderful and works great, however the fence is lacking.”

I suspect your table saw fence has a two-clamp system. One grabs on the front rail, and another grabs on the back. The rear clamp can often be tensioned independently of the front. Inspect the mechanism that makes the fence work and see if there’s a nut you can tighten that will put more grab on the back part of the fence.

It may be that, because of the age of your saw, the parts are worn and simply can’t be tightened up to a point where they work effectively. If that’s the case, have a look at the Delta Service Site https://www.portercable.com/service-support/parts-documentation and see if you can find service info for your machine. You may be able to order a few new parts and be back in business.

I’ve upgraded lots of old table saws with new fences. If your saw is working fine, this is worth considering. You’ll just have to shop after market fences and decide if the cost of the fence is worth the value of the saw.
