Thank you for being patient while I asked the experts, here is the reply:

I will be pretty obvious that there is a coating on it, but it won’t do much to alter the color or tone of the wood.

Hi Bob. Poly can had adhesion problems with other finishes. I would suggest applying a couple coats of this product as an intermediary before applying your water based poly:
