A “hot wax pot” is perfect for the hot hide glue and costs $25-$60.

Hello Jim. You might try to see if you can add some stretchers. There might be enough flex in the current situation to allow for it, or you might be able to steam apart the joints and re-glue. Short of that, any reinforcements such as the blocks that you mention could be helpful. I like that idea better than adding screws, etc., which seem to have short-lived benefit and create more problems down the road. Steaming apart and regluing with epoxy or polyurethane glue could help as well, but once you start to go down those paths there’s no going back.
Best of luck,

Ah ha. You have learned very well. ” When a woodworker has a big blue up to do, They very soon learn that they are handicapped. You only have two hands.”

When I repair them, I believe the repair will be short-lived unless I beef up the joints. Other than stronger seat frame brackets (glue blocks), what else can I try on this type of chair?

Everything looked like I could attempt that project until it came to the glue up. The multitude of clamps and shims was daunting for sure. Terrific article. Thank you.

I have repaired several chairs, mostly dining chairs, with wedges. Made a lot of mistakes before using the vinager solution (heated but not boiling) that M A suggested. It takes time and patience. I do remove the wedges by drilling small holes in each side of each wedge and slow easy hand chisel them out. Make sure the chisels are extremely sharp and very small pieces remoded on each shave. I take the wedge out before using the vinegar. I have neer used a needle glue injector, as described, but can see the benefit of it. Going to get one.
It is such a pleaseure to restore old furniture of good quality and give people back their hierloom.

Great article
