The panels are 1/2 inch hickory veneered plywood that has some areas that had knots and they used a dark purplish filler to fill in when plywood was made. I am using clear oil polyurethane and have applied one thin coat with mineral spirit and noticed that some of that filler has lifted or chipped exposing the white ply underneath. How can I darken those areas after applying a coat of poly without using epoxy? Or what would be recommended to fix this?

Hello Michael,

Thank you for contacting us.

Examine them regularly, and if you see small cracks forming, it’s definitely time to replace. Also, if they look fine but you notice that your blade is slipping on the tires, I would suggest cleaning them, and if that doesn’t work you should replace them .

If you have any other questions, please chat, email, or call Customer Service.

Sincerely,

Hi Walter. If I understand what you are asking, you want to make a 1/32″ cut on planks that are 3/16″ and 1/8″ thick. You would have to do this on a bandsaw, using a sacrificial fence to avoid contacting the fence. It will be a delicate setup due to the thin slices that you want to cut. I would suggest getting a Laguna Resaw King bandsaw blade which is very stable and takes a thin kerf because of the narrow tooth set.

During which you showed a blue film you used for sign making. What was it and where do you get it?

Hello Howard. It will be hard to get enough stain penetration into the wood to make it so that you would have a deep green color consistently throughout the layer. And you’re right; the bleeding issue will make it challenging to add stain after the fact. Normally, when I want to introduce color variation into a blank, I will do so by gluing up different wood species. If I use stain or dye to do this, I do it after the turning is complete. and as I’m turning I create a ridge into the piece to define a clean break for the stain. It’s touchy, and therefore I don’t do this very often, but if you are careful with the detail when you are turning, it is possible to do this effectively.

The blanks are made laminating wood to create the size needed for the pattern being used. Wondering if it is possible to color a wood green to be used as part of a blank. Example might be a Christmas Tree pattern. Red, brown, white are all possible or close enough with natural wood color. Green is my challenge? Coloring the layer of wood in the lamination after gluing up the blank does not seem workable due to bleeding between layers. Thoughts?

Hello Kenneth,

No, we do not have plans for construction projects such as sheds. Menards has a great collection of these: https://www.menards.com/main/building-materials/books-building-plans/shed-plans/c-9668.htm
