Any experienced woodworker can attest to the fact that a good workbench is one of the keys to success for any project. More than a simple work surface, a well-made woodworking bench incorporates precise angles and a level top that serve as gauges for other projects.

This do-it-yourself version features a heavy laminated top, a convenient storage bin underneath and a design that allows for a precision woodworking vise and bench stop. The completed bench measures about 36 inches tall by 26 inches wide by 60 inches long, and is designed to fit a vise with a 4- by 7-inch jaw.

      Hello Michael,

Here’s what the experts had to say about your question:

Thanks for inquiring with us. Unfortunately our coverage of carving is pretty light and we do not have any resources that cover this topic. Best of luck.

OK, this might be asking for a lot! 😬

Would you have any plans for an adjustable workbench (height) and portable? I have an island countertop that I have dragged around for a few years. Now that we have our forever home, I need something adjustable and something that rolls. I have two workbenches and a tablesaw that are all different heights. And it drives me a little crazy. Thanks!

Oh sure, you thank STEFAN for his feedback but totally ignore me making the exact same point a month earlier. What am I, a potted plant? I see who the golden child is around here. If you need me, I’ll be in the corner looking all underwatered. (Just kidding. I love your website. Thanks for all the great info.)

I’m a beginning woodworker and would like to make this bench. I have limited space so I may need to modify some of the dimensions but I do have a question about the plans. They specify the dimensions as T, W, L in the cutting schedule. Can someone tell me what T stands for?

Great question. Sorry, we don’t have plans for a portable workbench, but if you like that one I bet you could modify the design to lighten it up, hinge the legs, and make the lower tray removable for portability.

I would like to build a portable wood carvers bench. Similar to a shaving horse but with a post at one end with a vertical vise to allow clamping a carving and heavy enough to allow hitting the clamped piece with a mallet and chisel. Any suggestions? I’d really appreciate some help here.
