This do-it-yourself potting bench makes it easy to get a head start on warm-weather gardening.

It features a generously sized work top with a hutch above for tools, seeds and small pots. Below, shelves hold larger items, and a large compartment is just right for bulky bags of potting soil, fertilizer or a covered compost container.

Best of all, the design is simple enough to build in a weekend or two, even if you’re more gardener than woodworker. That’s why our potting bench plans are so useful. The potting bench measures about 51 inches long by 24 inches deep by 65 inches tall.

I built a backyard slider a few years ago, then the grandchildren outgrew it, so my wife and demo’ed it today and we are looking at using the remaining lumber to build a potting bench in the slider’s place.

I’m logged in as a premium member, but am still unable to access this plan….
Adding additional details to the description would remove much of the confusion on this …. as is, no one appears to be able to access this information !

Ticket 19796 1) Is this the only plan? you show it under “Potting Bench Plans” implying there is more than one plan.
    2) Why the 1/8″ spacing among the top boards (L)? With potting there is always material dropping which eventually will fall thru the cracks and to the shelves below. Another concern is not not having a continuous solid surface to mix materials prior to potting. Am I missing something here?
    3) What are the detriments of using different types of wood (other that appearance)? For example, can I use Fir for all the 2 1/2 x 3 1/2 material needed and Cedar to the thinner pieces?
    4) Wood treatment? If material is untreated, would you apply ANY type of finish, regardless of wood type?

      Dear George,

Thank you for your patience. In regards to your question-

      1) Is this the only plan? you show it under “Potting Bench Plans” implying there is more than one plan.
This is currently the only potting bench plan.

      2) Why the 1/8″ spacing among the top boards (L)? With potting there is always material dropping which eventually will fall thru the cracks and to the shelves below. Another concern is not not having a continuous solid surface to mix materials prior to potting. Am I missing something here?
This is to allow room for seasonal expansion and contraction of the boards.

      3) What are the detriments of using different types of wood (other that appearance)? For example, can I use Fir for all the 2 1/2 x 3 1/2 material needed and Cedar to the thinner pieces?
You can choose whatever wood you would like. The author was just throwing out some options. If the bench will remain outside and will be exposed to rain I would not recommend fir as it is not resistant to rot.

      4) Wood treatment? If material is untreated, would you apply ANY type of finish, regardless of wood type?
I wouldn’t apply any finish but that would be a personal preference. If you want to apply something, you could use a penetrating deck finish or similar.

      Sincerely,

      Paul
