Start building your own ice box today with our DIY project plans. There was a time when an ice box like this could be found in almost every home. Although refrigerators have rendered them obsolete, antique oak ice boxes remain popular with collectors, even though they’re usually expensive and hard to find.

This DIY woodworking project and authentic reproduction is neither: it is both inexpensive and easy to build, making use of readily available materials and requiring only straight cuts. It’s also versatile, and makes a great end table or bedside table.

The one-door ice box measures 26 inches tall by 23 inches wide by 17 inches deep. All DIY project plans are available exclusively to WWGOA members only. Join today!

Hi Robert. Thanks for checking with us on this, but unfortunately we don’t have a plan for a toy box.
      Thanks

I don’t see any insulation? No drain hole. No shelving. Is this not to be USED as an ICEBOX? IF I did want to use it that way what other materials would I need? I wanted to make the real thing.

Hi, Pamela. Sorry; this project is not intended to produce an actual working ice box. It is a non-working replica that is intended to be used as an end table, bedside table, or conversation piece. I like your idea of making a real one, however, as that would be very cool.
I’ve never seen an actual working ice box, but to augment this for that purpose, I’d say that you are on the right track. I would use XBS insulation (pink or blue stuff at most home centers), and add a copper or stainless steel pan with a drain hole. I’d also raise the height of the base by several inches, and create a drawer to hold a drain pan. I’d put this on ball bearing slides, although that wouldn’t be historically accurate so you might rethink that if you want full authenticity.
I would also consider putting the top on hinges so that you could load the ice from the top rather than the front. I would also scale the entire project up by quite a bit, as this seems more like a “mini fridge ice box” than a full size. If you put a big block of ice in this one there won’t be much room for food or beverages.
