A good book, a tall glass of iced tea, and the gentle swaying motion of a shady hammock on the patio, next to the pool, or out in the yard. Sounds like paradise, doesn’t it? With a few basic tools and some inexpensive materials, any woodworker with a free weekend can create a place to relax and catch a few winks.

This easy-to-build hammock frame project calls primarily for straight cuts and requires only basic construction techniques. Made entirely of straight-grain Douglas fir, the frame is not only sturdy, comfortable, and safe, but it’s attractive enough to blend nicely with any landscaping. Designed to fit a standard-size hammock sling, the completed project measures 16 feet long by 4 feet wide.

What will the weight limit be? And, what parts need to beef up the limit to around 400lbs.

      Hello John,

We don’t have the weight rating available for this project, but the frame should be good for 400 pounds. That said, it wouldn’t hurt to beef it up a bit for some additional confidence. Be sure to get a hammoc sling that is rated for that weight. Something like this: https://amzn.to/3DBPA4i

Looks like a great way to make a couple hundred bucks in a couple hours! People here in Upstate New York are going to love these. Thanks for a great idea! Simple to make and classy looking. I could see doing it with a glue up of the fir with cedar in layers like a cutting board and selling them for 1500$. I’m really glad I took the bait and became a paid member!

I’ve noticed that when many other people’s comments had mentioned that they couldn’t find the plans, the customer service dept. replied saying that in order to receive the plans that they would have to log in as premium member(upgrade their accounts, which of coarse costs money.) Tell me why the heck in the advertisement for your website do you state that by becoming a member “FOR FREE” that you (us, wwgoa new members) will now have access to 1,600 woodworking plans. How is that right. It sure does seem that FREE sure does not mean at all what it once did. FREE means stare at the jerk talking fast distracting you with all sorts of nonsense and false promises that’ll tickle your ears while Slick Rick slips the wallet out of your back pocket and takes his fee for playing his joke on you
Shame on you. Very unAmerican if you ask me. At least what America used to stand for and made people proud to be American. (Having a good solid word that meant something, and being honest especially to their fellow man)

I tinkered with this concept, put dowel pins at key points, used chain and turnbuckles for the lateral supports and it is a portable frame now. This is handy since most campgrounds do not permit us to tie off to trees anymore. I also made extensions for the vertical pieces so I can attach an awning on those sunny days when I can’t find shade to put it.

Woodworking tools are available from a variety of sources these days, including home centers, woodworking specialty stores, on-line retailers. You can also commonly find used tools available through various local sources. The best thing to do is to search the internet for tool sources in your area, or ask via a local woodworking guild as to where you might be able to find good quality woodworking tools.
