You can try a woodburner, available at craft stores and woodworking specialty stores. It's basically a pen that gets hot, so you can burn into the wood anything you can create with the "pen." One trick I've seen is printing what you want to write by selecting a font on the computer and writing in a Word format, then tracing it on to the wood using carbon paper. You can follow the traced letters with the woodburner, which is easier than freehand.

You can also explore laser engraving. Check it out in the yellow pages. Almost anything, from text to photos, can be laser engraved on to nearly any surface, and it's fairly economical.
