I want to thank you publicly for the DVDs that you are making. I have learned so much but the biggest tip for me is to cut the wood (rails and stiles especially) over sized and then cut to fit. So many projects have cutting sizes on the plans and then when assembled they aren't quite perfect fits. Now they are. Thank you for making the DVDs and teaching on them so well.

    Hi George,
I saw you on the "tube" as we say in Sweden. The jig for making circles is very good and other things with you as well. so, therefore I applied my membership just a few minutes ago!
I bought a bandsaw produced 1954 here in Sweden. This saw is a huge thing the band has 5 300 mm and the whole saw is maybe of 500 kg of weight, or more.
And because I am a beginner in woodworking I need support in practically everything. Hopefully, I will find it on these sides.
In the start, I would like to ask where I could get some information about tensions for bandsaw blades and who sells the gages for that mesurement.

    Thanks
    Jiri (George)

Lenox sells a tension meter for bandsaw blades. You can see it here http://www.toolcenter.com/62126.html

Here's a chart I found covering tensions required for bandsaw blades

    1/8" @ 1/8 mark = 29,000 psi

    1/4" @ 1/8 mark = 25,000, @ 1/4" = 35,000 psi

    3/8" @1/8 = 9000, @ 1/4 =12,000 @ 3/8 = 15,000 @1/2 = 21,000 psi

    1/2" @ 1/8= 7000, @ 1/4 = 8000 @ 3/8 = 10,000 @ 1/2 = 14,000 @ 3/4 = 16,500 psi

    3/4" @ 1/8 = 3500, @ 1/4 = 5000 , @ 3/8 = 6000, @ 1/2 = 8500 , @ 3/4 = 9000 psi

I set my blades by feel, starting by getting enough tension on the blade to make sure it will stay on the saw. Then, a test cut tells me more. When you apply cutting pressure to the front of a sharp blade it shouldn't deflect away from the cut. If it does, assuming you didn't push overly hard, add more tension. If, when resawing, you get a barrel shape to the cut, instead of a perfectly straight cut, add more tension.

Glad you're enjoying the DVDs. You're right about cut lists. They should be considered a reference, but not the whole truth. You've got to plan your work and work your plan, going forward in a logical sequence so all the parts "play nice" together.

    Thanks for the compliments.

George, someone gave me the essentials of woodworking dvd and i've seen it several times.

You're a very good teacher who communicates in a clear understandable manner, and the production of the video I saw was very good combined with nice up close action shots. I look forward to seeing other videos you have produced.

Hello George, I made the circle cutting jig for my bandsaw from your video and I have one question. If I want an 8" diameter I set the pivot pin 4" from the blade. But if my material is more than 4 ' how do I place it on the pin and get the four inch cut? Is that the purpose of the notch, to achieve the 4" distance to the pin?
Enjoy your DVDS and other videos.
