There are a few different approaches you can try. When I'm doing a bowl I turn the whole thing start to stop with the wood green. I keep the walls thin, and make sure I cut through the pith (the very center of the log), which helps remove some of the more stressed wood. I may get a few small checks, but nothing too bad.
Some turners saturate their turnings with stabilizer like Pentacryl. You can soak the blank in this before starting, or brush it on as you go, or soak the completed turning it in. Follow the manufacturer's directions. It's available from Woodcraft http://www.woodcraft.com
When you ask about a lamp, I wonder if you're turning a green log like a spindle, between centers, and not like a bowl, on a faceplate or chuck. If you are, my guess is that you're leaving a lot of pith in the turning, and it will be very difficult to keep this piece from cracking without using a stabilizer.

Thanks for the suggestions, I am turning the lamps as a spindle and I'll give your comment a try. Thanks again
