I just bought a 24 inch Leigh Jig and Leigh recommended using their 8mm bits. Is this necessary? I only have 1/4 and 1/2 collets for my PC routers.

You can use 1/4" shank bits with your Leigh jig, but 8 mm shank bits are recommended for slightly better cuts. It's not unusual that you only have 1/4" and 1/2" collets for your router, but don't sweat that. Once you find a distributor selling bits for the Leigh jig, you'll also find they have a 1/2" to 8 mm reducer you can insert in your 1/2" collet so you can use the 8 mm shanks.

8mm shank bits have approximately 58% more mass in the shank of the bit and as a result they vibrate and chatter less and produce a finer finish. Leigh uses 8mm shank bits with their entire dovetail jig line.
