I am going to buy a router that I can make raised panels, rails and stiles. I know I need one that has variable speed but how about power? Can I get by with a 2 1/4 hp motor or do I need a larger one?

If the router is going to live in your router table all the time I recommend getting a 3.5 hp machine.

If you'll be installing the router in the table as needed and using it hand-held the rest of the time, get the 2-1/4 hp machine.

The smaller router can be used with a horizontal panel raiser, but will take more passes. Material you can remove in two swipes with the big boy will take three with the smaller routers.

You're dead on about variable speed. It's a must with large diameter bits.
