    Can door hinges be mortared without a jig?

    Yes, hinges can be mortised in without a jig. Our Contributing Editor, Seth Keller, is working on a how-to story right now that covers this topic. It will be on the web site soon.

    The short version is that you need to trace the hinge position on to the material and rout the recess using a straight bit in your router. The small trim routers work great for this. With some practice you can do this free hand. Try it on scrap first.
