Hi - I am a novice woodworker. I am considering making a twin bed (frame and headboard) as my next project. I was wondering if I could use pocket screw joinery to connect the bed legs to the bed rails, or if it is not strong enough. Thanks in advance.

Kirt- you will be safe using pocket hole screws, provided you use enough of them. # in each end will do the job. That said, I recommend that you step out a little and try some joinery instead. Or, use brackets made specifically for bed rails. If you want a really solid connection, try using a tennon and mortise joint that is held together with a bolt. You drill a hole thru the leg, tennon and the first few inches of bed rail. You drill a perpendicular hole in the bed rail where the bolt will attach to a nut. Countersink the head of the bolt in the leg for looks and cover it with a bed bolt cover (look in a hardware catalogue for them). Don't be afraid to make a mistake. That's part of the learning process we all are going through. Good luck.

Personally, I love pocket screws. With that being said, I would not use them for a bed frame. Not because they are weak, but for the sake of convenience. Try this site for mortised bed fasts, they specifically designed for the job, plus they will test your mortising skills. Here is a web site.

Definitely don't use them for structural effects for a bed. To much movement will put tension and will work loose. I have built many beds and believe me there is no substitute to bed rail post connectors.
