I have a project that requires the use of a piece of oak veneer plywood 12 feet long and only 10 inches wide. What is the best way to unit two pieces of plywood end-to-end to make up the desired 12 foot length? Oh yes, the project is a mantel for our fireplace and the plans call for the use of plywood and fancy trim to complete the project.

I have done this with good results using biscuits and glue. If you are having difficulty getting a perfect glue line this way, you could joint these edges with a router, straight bit and straight edge.

Ideally you will find a way to support the the joint in some way from underneath it, such as place the joint directly over the top of one of the mantel supports. If this is not possible, perhaps your plan might allow you to double up two layers of plywood (creating a 1.5" plywood sandwich), and have the joints staggered on opposite ends. If that is not possible, I would try to sneak a couple of steel plates underneath the joint to support it, assuming that the bottom of your long panel will be concealed.

    Good luck!
