I AM ATTEMPTING TO LEARN TO CUT DOVETAILS ON MY PC TEMPLATE. THE INSTRUCTIONS INDICATE THAT THE BIT DEPTH SHOULD BE 3/8" AND CAN BE SET CONSISTENTLY BY USING THE PRE-SET STOP TAB. HOWEVER, I HAVE WATCHED SEVERAL VIDEOS THAT INDICATE DEPTH SET UP CAN BE MADE BY TRACING THE THICKNESS OF THE ADJOINING BOARD'S WIDTH ONTO THE BOARD TO BE CUT. WHAT IS THE CORRECT WAY..??? WHY DOES PC USE THE 3/8" DEPTH FOR ALL WIDTHS OF WOOD? HAVE I INHALED TOO MUCH SAWDUST OR AM I JUST EASILY CONFUSED? THX JACKY

You're looking at two different approaches. When cutting through dovetails you can set bit depth by tracing the thickness of the mating board on to your material, then setting bit depth to just remove that line.

When cutting half blind dovetails you need to carefully set the bit to the depth prescribed by the manufacturer. Once this is set, you can cut half blind dovetails in any thickness of material. Remember "Too tight, too deep. Too loose, too shallow." If the half blind joint is too tight, your bit is set too deep. Tiny adjustments make the difference between a good fit and bad fit.
