I have some 1 x pine I had cut from a downed tree. It is great wood, but in the air drying process, the wood becane discolored and weathered. I planed it down to use as paneling, but my wife doesn't like the gray/weathered look. Can to wood be bleached or lightened?

    Thanks in advance

The problem with wood bleach is that it leaves the wood looking dull. It is fine if you are painting, but try some potassium dichromate as a coloring agent for the wood and see if that helps. Also, you can experiment with an ammonia solution to change the gray rather than bleach.
Ammonia is used for fuming wood but applying it directly will give you an idea of the color change that will take place. Besides it's faster than fuming and I don't mind sanding. Try 4 tablespoons in a gallon of water to start. And don't forget breathing protection and ventilation when using chemicals.
