I've built about 6 acoustic guitars from kits. How about you? Made any musical instruments? If so, which ones? How'd it go? I've really enjoyed making guitars. It'd be instrumental for other woodworkers to know how the experience went for you. I wouldn't string you along. Let us know....

    Hi:
I used to do the "rough" part of everything in wood that my brother and I used to work on as kids, and he used to do the "fine" part, so he went to become a master violin maker and I did something else.
About 10 years ago, I got the "bug" of making stuff in wood, so I decided to make guitar. It took several years making the jigs and learning, but I was able to make 2 good sounding guitars, but discovered that the guitar making took way too much space, so I decided to make flutes. So I ended up making Native American Style Flutes. This took about 3 year to master. Now I am branching into making Orff style Xylophones. Both are a lot of fun, but it is extremely difficult to sell them here in El Paso, so I am looking in other places. Ebay has been a fairly good place to promote flutes, but not good enough.
I would like to hear from people that have found good places to sell their stuff.

George, I haven’t made a guitar like you, but have made several mountain dulcimers. There is a lot of freedom in making a dulcimer in which shape, size and type of wood used in the construction defines you as a woodworker or luthier (builder of stringed instruments). I have attached a picture of my latest dulcimer made of cherry wood that I purchased from a local sawyer.

I came from a third generation of luthiers which have built violins, violas and cellos. My dad loved making violins and sold a number of violins that found their way into the hands of many accomplished professionals.

    I love your website.

Very nice. Looks like you book matched the top. It's interesting to hear about the history of luthiery in your family. Thanks for sharing.
